In an emergency situation knowing how to promptly help people may save their lives. Being trained in CPR and first aid can provide the needed skills to help someone who is not breathing or someone with wounds. Students can learn these skills and more by entering online studies in CPR and first aid.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is conducted to restore a person’s breathing and heart rate. The use of manual chest compressions helps keep blood flowing to the brain and heart of an individual. This act is also extremely important to keep oxygen circulating to the brain, which is essential so an individual doesn’t suffer other injuries.
- The first response to emergencies is known as first aid. This can include a variety of actions like responding to cuts, breathing emergencies, poisonings, and more. The goal is to try to stabilize a person until further medical help can be given. Online studies for these specialized skills train students through academic video instruction and testing. The academic section of learning online may require a follow-up on-site skills assessment before being allowed to take the certification exam. This is to ensure that students can apply what they learned in a physical situation.
Students can take online courses separately or combine them into a certificate program that offers training in both areas. Either path prepares students to correctly administer CPR and first aid. Depending on what career students want to enter a mixed program may be the best option.
- CPR training online allows students to finish the academic side of the course in 14 days. Once this training is completed many online schools require students to complete an on-site skills test before completing certification. Training can take one to three hours and it focuses on all aspects of CPR. Study provides needed skills to help adults, children, and infants. Scene assessment, artificial life support, and one or two person rescue are some areas of study.
- Online first aid training is often broken down into different subjects and courses. These can include a basic first aid course and infant and child first aid course. A basic course covers how to respond and recognize cardiac problems, heat and cold emergencies, sudden illnesses, and treatment of wounds and injuries. Certification online in CPR and first aid may take eight to fourteen hours to complete. Broad areas of topics are discussed to prepare students to help people in emergencies. Burn care, shock, injury assessment, and blood-borne pathogen awareness make up some specific subjects.
Accredited online programs are useful because of the short duration of time required to complete a program or course. Become certified by utilizing online studies in CPR and first aid training. Students can start by researching programs and requesting more information about an education in CPR and first aid. Accreditation is provided to various online schools and colleges as proof that they can offer a quality education. Agencies such as the Distance Education and Training Council (www.detc.org) can provide full accreditation.
